I have considerable experience in working with clients to produce metal sculptures to fit the size, shape and color needs of both residential and commercial settings. When asked to design artwork for a particular site, I provide examples of past projects, references, material samples, color mockups and full-scale patterns which must meet your approval before I am given a go-ahead to fabricate the artwork. My commissioned sculpture projects have been successfully installed in interior and exterior sites in many private homes and in such public locations as the Cleveland Clinic Hospitals, University of Michigan Hospitals and many corporate and university lobbies.
My wall sculptures developed out of the need for low maintenance artwork that has the complexity and color possibilities of painting but also includes the architectural interplay, visual impact and durability of sculpture. By designing my metal relief sculptures to include voids, through which the supporting wall can be seen, these works relate to and interact with the surrounding architecture more than solid objects that are confined to a picture frame or pedestal.
Compositionally, my work connects abstract design elements with a mix of realistic subject matter (i.e. the human figure, symbols and artifacts) to make public sculpture more accessible to viewers whose interest in art is usually secondary to conducting commerce, getting healthcare or attending classes. While there is a place for art that confronts or challenges the viewer with raw geometry, my philosophy of site-specific public art is that it should first show a respectful relationship to a building's design and working-space as created by the architects, and secondly it subject matter should address the interests of the expected audience. Materially, my wall relief sculptures are fabricated from aluminum plate and extrusions cut into shapes that are welded and riveted together to produce a strong lightweight structure that can be attached to walls of any substrate. This results in a detailed artwork that is fairly "people-proof" and requires little or no maintenance. By using aluminum rather than much heavier steel, no special load-bearing modifications are necessary for interior wall sites. For exterior display areas, the use of aluminum also eliminates the rusting problems associated with similar works made of steel. These sculptures can also be fabricated to accommodate curved wall installations. Large scale sculptures are accomplished by using a modular fabrication system wherein sections of the artwork are installed in an overlapping edge fashion to give the impression of one large composition. This modular approach also simplifies shipping and allows large works to be installed by a single worker with minimal equipment required. All of my metal sculptures are spray finished with very durable catalyzed urethane paints. The colors used are formulated to be lightfast under exterior sun exposure and the surfaces are durable enough to literally be cleaned with a garden hose and a brush if needed.
